Tips and Advice : Kitchen Comfort - Ten Ways in Which a Good Kitchen Appeals to Your Senses
Walk into your kitchen and stand there for a minute. Do you feel the urge to get out of there as soon as possible, or to stay and create something delicious? This is the test of your kitchen design and decor success.
Kitchens that make you want to stay and cook in them typically have several things in common:
1) They feel spacious. You can accomplish this with open floor space, plenty of bare work surfaces, higher ceilings, large windows, and mirrors.
2) They are beautifully lit with windows and sheer curtains that color the light a warm pretty color, skylights, or warm toned fluorescent light bulbs that utilize new technology.
3) They are well ventilated. They have lovely breezes washing the room because two open windows create circulation of the air inside.
4) They are tidy and every object has a convenient place to store it when not in use, so that it is completely out of your way.
5) They are very clean and hygienic. Since there is no clutter, it is quick and easy to wash all of the surfaces regularly.
6) They feel homey. Personal touches and images that are sentimental to you have been added to give the kitchen your own sense of character.
7) They are not completely cut off from the rest of the home. Part of a wall has been removed so that the person cooking can see and communicate with people in the adjoining room.
8) They reflect your aesthetic taste, make use of beautiful color and of materials made of natural substances, like ceramic, stone, and bamboo wood.
9) They smell like herbs and spices, or fruit. Cleaning with lemon juice and other Eco friendly products will keep your kitchen safe and hygienic, without making it reek of ammonia. Planted pots of herbs on the windowsills will make breezes aromatic. Lining your exposed shelves with clear jars of spices is a beautiful decor accent in its own right, and when uncorked, will add a lovely sent to the room. Cloves stuck in an orange with a slightly scratched peel, and sprinkled with Cinnamon, create an especially pleasing perfume for a kitchen. Several of these hung in baskets, are a lovely way to both beautify and deodorize your kitchen.
10) They give you a haven to rest in. A well designed kitchen takes into account that you'll be working there for a long time, and won't expect you to to remain standing throughout the duration. Comfortable seating and work surfaces at ergonomic heights, are very important to keep the cooks from becoming tired and fed up with the job. There should also be a place that is pleasant to sit sipping tea while looking out a kitchen window at something pretty and far away, or at a poster that allows the eye to look far off into a landscape.
When you use these principles in your kitchen design and decor, you will enjoy spending time in your kitchen and be inspired to cook and bake.
